New Phase of Work in Uganda

Dear Friends & Supporters of FOL,
It has been quite a while since the last newsletter was published in 2018. We apologize for this long pause, but it does not mean that nothing has been happening! In this issue, read about the progress of our work there over the past year, and plans to meet growing needs.
Working With Our Partners in Uganda
At the time of our last visit to Uganda, we became aware of some potential issues with our local Ugandan partner nonprofit organization, Canaan International Outreach Ministries (CIOM). CIOM is in charge of the day-to-day operation of our school in Ndagga. CIOM is also involved in the operation and management of other schools in Uganda. It has been Fountain of Life Foundation’s policy to require a high level of accountability and transparency from CIOM, more so than what most US nonprofit organizations funding sponsorships in Africa require. Some tension developed as we sought greater financial disclosure than they are accustomed to. CIOM perceived our request for very detailed disclosures to be unnecessarily intrusive and felt that we were questioning their integrity. It was mutually agreed to hold sponsorship funds until these matters were resolved.

It has taken a number of months to work through this issue, but we have finally come to an agreement on how things will be handled in the future. CIOM has agreed to be completely transparent and cooperate fully with the requirements we have set, including the opening of a separate bank account exclusively for our school. This separate bank account will greatly facilitate our ability to audit CIOM’s records. We have released all sponsorship funds that were being held via a wire transfer to this new bank account. Although this information may not be very interesting, I believe we owe this level of disclosure to you, our partners who support us in this project.
Our Next Uganda Trip
With this, we are now entering into an exciting phase of our work in Uganda! We will be sending another team to visit our school this summer. The dates are tentatively set for August 9-18.
